I cringed as I listened to publisher Jenn T. Grace during our interview for my podcast. She was telling me that the most successful non-fiction books don't just deliver content about a topic. They take readers on a journey through the author's life, weaving key messages and content into the writer's lived experience. In other words, they tell the author's story.
I knew immediately that she was right. And I know you're supposed to do that. Helping leaders tell their stories to change what people think, say and do is what I do for a living. Yet, I'd just published my book on Narrative Intelligence. And hadn't done much of that at all. Ugh.
Why didn't I tell my story? The same reasons most leaders don't.
